Build your own Romulan Scout Vessel!
------------------------------------
Version 1.0, 02.02.1995 by Ulrich Prahn

This is a cardboard model of the Romulan Scout Vessel as seen on Star
Trek - The Next Generation in the Episode "The Defector".

What you need:
--------------

- the files scout1.ps, scout2.ps, scout3.ps and scout4.ps
- a printer with postscript ability (or a postscript interpreter)
- four sheets of (letter or A4 sized) cardboard, 0.2 mm thick
  (around 130 g/m^2)
Be sure NOT to use thicker cardboard!
(if you do not want to paint the model, you may use green
coloured cardboard, if it is available)
- a pair of scissors
- a sharp knife
- a ruler
- all purpose glue (I recommend UHU transparent glue)

Instructions:
-------------

Print out the files scout 1.ps to scout 4.ps on cardboard sheets, or
print on paper and copy the printouts on cardboard with a Xerox.

General Hints:

- cut out each part as accurately as possible along the solid outline

- cut out each part only as needed

Numbers:

- to avoid confusion it is usefull to write the number of the part on
its back after cutting it out

- small numbers on a part show which parts are to be glued there

Lines:

_.._.._.. lines mark areas where other parts are to be glued

_ _ _ _ Fold these lines downwards. To make that easier and more
accurate score these lines with a sharp knife before cutting
out the piece. (Make sure not to cut through the cardboard
          with the knife).

-o- -o- Prick the circles with a needle. Score beetween the pricks
on the backside of the part with a dull instrument like a
          knitting needle.

-x- -x- Fold this lines upwards. To make this easier prick the
middle of each cross with a needle and score beetween the
pricks on the backside with a sharp knife.

Some similar parts are marked with a P or S. P stands for port side,
S for starboard.

Part 1-3; S15 (P15) (Main Hull)
-------------------

Score all lines of part 1 before cutting.

Glue the tab half underway part 1 at the same position it was before
cutting out.

Round the stern end (the end marked with P15 and S15) of part 1 by
curling it around a smooth pencil or by pulling it over the edge of
your desk.

Fold all lines of part 1 and close the part by glueing the tab under
the other side of the part.

Strengthen parts 2 and 2a by glueing them on another layer of
cardboard. After drying cut them out, stick and glue them together so
that you get a cross-shaped intersection.

Glue 2b and 2c together back to back. Attach 2b/c to 2/2a (check the
little numbers).

After drying shove this group from the bow into part 1 until bulkhead
2b/c fits with the end of part 1. Glue 2b/c to 1.

The shaping of the stern of the hull may be a little tricky:

Carefully apply glue beetween the rounded stripes of part 1 and group
2/2a, and beetween the stripes.

Form the stripes over group 2/2a and glue them together.

Close the remainig hole in part 1 with part 3, glue 3a to 3.

Strengthen parts P15 and S15 with a layer of cardboard, attach them to
part 1 as marked.

Parts 4-8; S16 (P16) (Command Module)
--------------------

Fold and round part 4 so, That it is shaped like 4a on the bottom,
like 4c on the upper side and like 4b on the rear end.

Score and fold the tabs of part 4a and glue the piece to the bottom
side of part 4. Score and fold part 4c and glue it to the upper side
of part 4. Strengthen part 4b and close the rear end of part 4 with it
(4b reaches over 4a).

Round part 4d and fold the tabs. Glue 4d on 4c.

Score and fold part 4e. Glue 4e to 4b and 4c.

Cut out the little rectangles near part 5 and apply them to the
markings on part 5.

Score and fold part 5 so it gets shaped like bulkheads 5a and 5b.

Glue the tab halfway under part 5 and, after drying, close part 5 to
an octogonal ring.

Strengthen part 5a and part 5b. Glue 5a and 5b in part 5, so 5a fits
with one end of 5 and 5b with the other (make sure the short vertical
lines on 5a and 5b are in one linewith the seam of part 5).

Join group 4-4e with group 5-5b by glueing 4b to 5a.

Score all lines on part 6 before cutting (watch for the -x- -x- marked
lines !), cut out and fold it. If all lines are folded properly, part
6 has the shape of part 6a on one side, and the shape of part 6b on
the other side.

Glue the tab halfway under the side of part 6 where it was before
cutting out. Close part 6. Strengthen part 6a and 6b. Glue the
bulkheads 6a and 6b in part 6 so they fit with the ends. Glue group
6-6b to group 4-5b. The seams of the parts 4,5,6 should be in one
line.

Round part 7 and glue it on top of group 4-6b.

Strengthen part 4f, fold it, glue part 4g to it and glue part 4f to
the lower hull of group 4-7.

Score, cut and fold parts P16 and S16 and glue them to oddly shaped
boxes. Attach them to their markings on part 6 (the arrow marks the
direction; the small rectangle on part P/S 16 should point in the same
direction as the arrowhead).

Fold part 8 and close it on the tab. Glue part 8 to 6b (the little
line on the tab of part8 marks the upper side).

Glue group4-8 to part 2c. The markings of part 9a on part 7 and part 1
should be on the upper side.

Part S1-S8 (P1-P8) (Starboard (Port) Warp Nacelle)
------------------

Strengthen parts S1 (P1), S2 (P2)and S3 (P3). Cut out the parts and
stick them together (check little numbers on parts). Score and cut
part S4 (P4). Round the ends of part S4 (P4) similar to the stern end
of part 1. Fold part S4 (P4) and glue tab S4a (P4a) halfway under part
S4 (P4).

Glue group S1-S3 (P1-P3) to the backside of of the wall of part S4
(P4) with the striped area on it. part S2 (P2) and part S3 (P3) are
positioned at the end of the cuts in part S4 (P4) and within the
scored lines.

Strengthen part S5 (P5), score and fold it upwards. Glue part S5 (P5)
to the backside of part S4 (P4), in front of group S1-S3 (P1-P3), so
that the rim of part S4 (P4) fits with part S5 (P5).

Apply glue to the edges of group S1-S3 (P1-P3) and part S5 (P5) and
close part S4 (P4) on the tab.

After drying treat the ends of part S4 (P4) similar to the stern end
of part 1.

Strengthen part S6a (P6a). Round part S6 (P6) and glue part S6a (P6a)
to it so it gets shaped to look like the marking on part S5 (P5). Glue
group S6 (P6)-S6a (P6a) to the marking on part S5 (P5).

Strengthen part S7 (P7). and part S8 (P8). Glue S7a (P7a) and S8a
(P8a) to S7 (P7) and S8 (P8). Glue S7a (P7a) and S8a (P8a) to the top
and the bottom of part S4 (P4).

Part S9-S14 (P9-P14) (Starboard (Port) "Wing")
--------------------

Strengthen part S13 (P13) and part S14 (P14). Glue part S14 (P14) to
part 1 (the little number S11 (P11) is at the stern). Glue part S13
(P13) to part S4 (P4) (the little number S10 (P10) should point to
part S6 (P6).

Score parts S10 (P10) and S11 (P11). Give them the shape of the rim of
part S9 (P9). Fold the tabs and glue S10 (P10) and S11 (P11) to S9
(P9). Close the wing with part S12 (P12).

Glue wing to part S14 (P14). Make sure that the part numbers of the
wing are equal to the little numbers on S14 (P14). The forward end of
the wing fits with the forward end of part 1.

Attach group S4-8a (P4-8a) to the wing. Make sure that the part
numbers of the wing are equal to the small numbers on S13 (P13).

Parts 9-10 (Fins)
----------

Strengthen part 9a and part 10a. Glue part 9b to part 9a. Glue group
9a-9b to the marking on part 1 and part 7; glue 10a to the marking on
part 1.

Score and fold part 9. Round the ends of part 9 and glue them together
without a tab. Glue part 9 to part 9a.

Score and fold part 10. Round the ends of part 10 and glue them
together without a tab. Glue part 10 to part 10a.

Now your Romulan Scout Vessel is complete.

If you want to paint the model and you do not know what colour to
choose, consult any ST: TNG episode with a romulan space ship; their
vessels got all the same green. (Or take a look at the jpg-picture
which is included in this package.)
